Pros and cons of TomTom Brazil app for iPhone and iPad

TomTom Brazil app good for

Id read all the reviews in Portuguese and English about the TomTom iPhone app when first released and was frightened off. After waiting a few months from their initial release I finally took the plunge. Ive been very pleasantly surprised with both. This is about the Brazilian version used on a 3Gs and is directed towards people traveling in, as opposed to living in, Brazil. All of the Portuguese reviews reflect someone living in-country and that probably could give a slightly different opinion (although I read the same type of reviews of the US version and it performs equally to the Brazilian version. I think that it, too, is a 5-star app). In my opinion, the TomTom Brazil app is fabulous! I operate in the northeastern part of the country, in the state of Ceará, way back in the boonies. Not only did it operate well, it surprised me with the breadth of the database. Very seldom could I not get a GPS signal, very seldom could it not tell me how to get somewhere. The two Portuguese voices worked flawlessly. At times when I had a less than stellar GPS connection, the app was slow to give me turning information in time to make the turn. However, it always correctly and quickly rerouted me. Obviously in Fortaleza and in Sobral I had excellent service. In Fortaleza the info database on gas stations and restaurants was quite good. Even on BR222 between Fortaleza and Tianguá, I got reliable info on gas stations. If you travel in NE Brazil, I strongly recommend this. I can only assume that it works even better in the more urban areas of south Brazil (even though the posted Portuguese reviews seem to indicate otherwise -- it could be an issue of speed limit; your speed is notably slower in the northeast because of the road conditions, thus giving the unit more time to respond, but thats just a guess). If you dont mind bringing an actual GPS unit along with you, then obviously it is going to work better than the iPhone. If you are traveling lighter and dont want to be bothered with additional equipment, the iPhone app is the way to go. Ive purchased the car kit and am eager to see if that enhances the reception of the GPS signal on my next trip.
I am very happy with this app. I would say its 95% accurate in RJ city. Buzios area maps need to be updated. Tom Tom Car kit improved gps signal however there is an issue with the battery life (While using the app., iPhone battery drains slitghtly faster than it charges) Missing fixed local speed radars is unaceptable. Please add that feature soon. No GPS app is perfect, but a leading co such as Tom Tom rolling up an app in such an important country deserves a prompt and serious update.
Well, you have to be careful if you are going to drive like that, but I didnt get lost. I was in Belo, Natal and almost Sao Paulo and It knew the roads, even the dirt ones. I had voice directions, turn by turn, visual cues. It was a great way to go and I didnt need international data turned on. Great purchase.
News streets are included. Don´t have speech text and few IPs, but i recommend.

Some bad moments

After the update to ios4. The app does not get a GPS fix. Does anyone know how to fix it?
The software seems to be very good, especially with tomtom car kit but my first experience was terrible. I got directions to turn right in the middle of a straight highway. After several kilometers, I reached the road sign to turn right but there was no road on map. After that I was completely out of the map for the next 30 minutes. Please revise Brazil map!!!
Maps inaccurate! Showed huge(!!!) longer routes and leaded to dead ends while other connections were missing. Without knowledge of my companion and his roadmap it would ve been a disaster! Also functionality compared to other program I use in the US is bad.
If you want to get lost in São Paulo and Rio, this is the perfect app for you.
This is the worst app I have ever had. Maps of Porto Alegre are completely outdated. Please, DO NOT BUY THIS APP. I wish I could have my money back, because so far, no route was made correctly. POIs are also incorrectly loaded for Porto Alegre. Save your money. Buy an Off-line map (paper - old fasjion way) and be happy.
Just moved to Sao Paulo and got this app, used onced and many mistakes in the info.
